Despite multimodal treatment options, glioblastomas remain among the deadliest forms of cancer. Due to their pronounced metabolic plasticity, they are able to adapt to hypoxia, nutrient deprivation, and treatment-related stress. Recent research shows that tumor cells are highly dependent on the amino acids serine and glycine — a potential vulnerability that the research group is specifically investigating. Patients with malignant gliomas are placed on a specially developed, 10-day serine- and glycine-free diet prior to scheduled surgery. During this period and as part of the surgical procedure, blood, cerebrospinal fluid, and tissue samples are collected and subjected to comprehensive metabolic and immunological analysis. The long-term goal is to lay the groundwork for establishing dietary interventions as a low-side-effect adjunct to existing therapies in glioma treatment.
