PPREVENT-OM: Prevention of Ovarian Metastases in Gastric Cancer

Despite treatment and diagnostic advances, metastasized gastric cancer has a poor prognosis. The prognosis is even more dismal in the presence of ovarian metastases. The PREVENT-OM1 study is a patient preference study to better understand ovarian metastases in gastric cancer and develop preventative measures. Participating patients will choose whether to have a prophylactic adnexextirpation (ovaries+ fallopian tubes) combined with the gastric cancer surgery, or solely have the gastric cancer surgery. The goal is to demonstrate feasibility as well as safety and ultimately show the impact on disease-free survival. The hypothesis being, elective oncologic gastric surgery for locally advanced gastric cancer combined with prophylactic adnexextirpation is a safe, disease-free and overall survival improving procedure.
