Successful vaccination programs against meningococci and pneumococci have led to a sharp decline in bacterial CNS infections in industrialized countries, while infections caused by viruses and fungi are on the rise. Children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and immunosuppression are particularly at risk of developing invasive fungal infections of the CNS despite antifungal prophylaxis. The project of the lab AG Lehrnbecher/Rudolph investigates the invasion of relevant human pathogenic fungi and viruses into the CNS using human models of the blood-brain and blood-cerebrospinal fluid barriers in order to improve diagnostics and prevention.
