A tumour is a complex ecosystem, comprising many different cell types and dynamic cell states. As each of these may contribute differently to disease progression, understanding this cellular heterogeneity is of central importance to cancer treatment. Technological advances enable high-resolution profiling of this tissue ecosystem, but each technology has unique strengths and limitations, and individual datasets vary greatly in sample size. Dr. Michael Tyler studies with his research group the role of cellular heterogeneity throughout cancer progression by integrating many datasets across disease stages, developing new methods to fully utilise their combined potential. This work aims to shed new light on the changes from healthy tissue to malignant and metastatic tumours, paving the way for new therapeutic strategies.
