High Five: Adding Platinum-Based Chemotherapy to Immunotherapy in Metastatic PD-L1-High Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer with High Tumor Burden
Immunotherapy has now become an established part of the standard of care for metastatic, non-driver-mutated non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). For patients with high PD-L1 expression (≥ 50%), both immunotherapy alone and the combination of immunotherapy and platinum-based chemotherapy are approved. However, prospective randomized trials directly comparing these two treatment strategies are not yet available.
Dr. Sophie Ambrosius’s research project involves the development and conduct of the investigator-initiated “High-Five” study, a multicenter, randomized, controlled Phase III trial designed to investigate the added benefit of platinum-based chemotherapy in combination with immunotherapy compared to immunotherapy alone. The focus is on patients with metastatic NSCLC and high PD-L1 expression who are at high risk due to a significant tumor burden. The aim of the study is to evaluate the impact of the two treatment approaches on disease progression in this clinically relevant subgroup.
Identifying high-risk populations and developing tailored, risk-adapted treatment strategies are essential prerequisites for the further advancement of personalized oncology. The “High-Five Study” has the potential to address a clinically significant question regarding the intensification of treatment for this patient group.
